Composed of three colors inspired by Pan-African colors - red, green and black - this flag is a true tribute to Martinique's African heritage.
The colors black, red and green were defined by the UNIA (Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League) as the official colors of the African people, symbols of their struggle for freedom, justice and equality.
Red symbolizes the blood that unites peoples and the blood shed for their liberation. Black represents the African people and their skin color, regardless of the states on the continent. Green symbolizes the lush nature of Africa, and of Martinique in particular.
